Why they are a saint

The Martyr Abdias [or Abidas] suffered in Persia during the reign of the emperor Izdegerd I for his refusal to renounce Christ and instead worship the sun and fire. The Orthodox Church commemorates Abdias on September 5.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Abdias as a patron when they bear the name Abdias at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on September 5. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
