New Calendar April 17 Old Calendar April 30

Why they are a saint

The Monk Akakios, Bishop of Melitinea, was born into a pious family in the Armenian city of Melitinea. His parents for a long time were childless, and in praying for a son, they vowed to dedicate him to God. Therefore the lad Akakios was given over to the Melitinea bishop Ostrios for the service of the Church.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Acacius as a patron when they bear the name Acacius at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on April 17. As a bishop, he is also remembered by clergy and those who serve the Church.
