Acindynus

Martyrs Acindynus, Pegasius, Aphthonius, Elpidephorus, Anempodistus, and 7,000 with them, of Persia

New Calendar November 2 Old Calendar November 15

Why they are a saint

Acindynus, Pegasius and Anempodistus were courtiers to King Shapur II of Persia. When the king began a fierce persecution of Christians, the three withdrew from court to a private house and, fearless of their own safety, openly exhorted their fellow-Christians to stand firm in their faith. For this they were arrested and brought before their former lord, who subjected them to many cruel tortures, from which they emerged miraculously unscathed.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Acindynus as a patron when they bear the name Acindynus at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on November 2. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
