Why they are a saint

Saint Agapitus, Bishop of Rome, was a zealous adherent of Orthodoxy. By his pious life he won the general esteem and was elevated to the See of Rome in the year 535. The Gothic king Theodoric the Great sent Agapitus to Constantinople for peace negotiations.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Agapitus as a patron when they bear the name Agapitus at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on April 17. Greek, pan-Orthodox Orthodox faithful also honor his as one of their own.
