Why they are a saint

Ahijah is kept on the calendar as an Old Testament prophet. Ahijah the Shilonite is remembered among the prophets of Israel in the books of Kings. The prophets are venerated because they spoke the word of God and prepared the coming of Christ. Orthodox Christians honor the prophets as those who spoke the word of God and pointed toward Christ.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Ahijah as a patron when they bear the name Ahijah at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on November 12. As a prophet, he is also honored by those who seek to hear and keep God's word.
