Why they are a saint

The Hieromartyr Alexander, Bishop of Jerusalem, was a disciple of the great teacher and writer of the Church, Clement of Alexandria. The Orthodox Church commemorates Alexander on May 16.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Alexander as a patron when they bear the name Alexander at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on May 16. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
