Why they are a saint

The Holy Martyr Alexander was a presbyter in the city of Pidna, not far from Thessalonica. The saint converted many pagans to Christianity by his preaching. Venerated as a martyr who died for the faith in Christ.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Alexander of Macedonia as a patron when they bear the name Alexander at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on March 13. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
