Why they are a saint
Venerable Alypios of the Caves was one of the first and best Russian iconographers. He was tonsured by Igoumen Nikon († March 23, 1088). Later, he was ordained as a Hieromonk. Venerated as a monastic saint, honored for a life of prayer and asceticism.
Patronage / why chosen as patron
Orthodox Christians usually take Alypios as a patron when they bear the name Alypios at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on August 17. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
