Why they are a saint
Pope Anastasius I was the bishop of Rome from 27 November 399 to his death on 19 December 401. Anastasius was born in Rome, and was the son of Maximus. He succeeded Siricius as pope and condemned the writings of the Alexandrian theologian Origen shortly after their translation into Latin.
Patronage / why chosen as patron
Orthodox Christians usually take Anastasius I as a patron when they bear the name Hierarch at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on April 20. As a bishop, he is also remembered by clergy and those who serve the Church.
