Why they are a saint

The Holy Martyrs Andrew and John, and John’s children Peter and Antoninus, suffered in the ninth century in the time of the cruel African ruler Ibrahim. The Orthodox Church commemorates Andrew on September 23.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Andrew as a patron when they bear the name Andrew at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on September 23. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
