Why they are a saint
Saint Aninas was born at Chalcedon into a Christian family. After the death of his parents, he withdrew at age fifteen into a monastery, where he received monastic tonsure. Venerated as a monastic saint, honored for a life of prayer and asceticism.
Patronage / why chosen as patron
Orthodox Christians usually take Aninas of the Euphrates as a patron when they bear the name Aninas at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on March 18. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
