Why they are a saint

The Martyr Anthony, a native of the city of Alexandria, was a Christian. For his confession of faith they tied him to a tree and tore at his body with iron hooks, and then sentenced him to burning. Venerated as a martyr who died for the faith in Christ.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Anthony of Alexandria as a patron when they bear the name Anthony at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on August 9. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
