New Calendar July 27 Old Calendar August 9

Why they are a saint

Venerable Anthusa, Abbess of Mantinea in Asia Minor, and her 90 Monastics (8th C) are commemorated by the Orthodox Church on July 27. Venerated as monastic saints, honored for a life of prayer and asceticism; little else about their lives has come down to us.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Anthusa as a patron when they bear the name Anthusa at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on July 27. As a monastic, she is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.

Prayer

O holy Anthusa, pray to God for us.

A short general prayer to a saint, not a liturgical text. No public-domain troparion for this saint is included.
