Why they are a saint

Saint Antiochus was from Galatia, and lived during the reign of Heraclius (610-641). He witnessed the martyrdom of the monks of Saint Savva’s Monastery (May 16) by the Saracens, and recorded their sufferings. He also wrote another book, called Pandect of the Scriptures. Venerated as a monastic saint, honored for a life of prayer and asceticism.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Antiochus as a patron when they bear the name Antiochus at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on December 24. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
