New Calendar October 10 Old Calendar October 23

Why they are a saint

She lived in the village of Zangliverion near Thessalonika. When she was still an infant, her father killed a Turkish neighbor in an argument and, to save his life, denied his Christian faith. To compound his apostasy he promised that when his daughter came of age she too would convert. Venerated as a new martyr, one who gave his life for Christ in more recent centuries.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Aquilina as a patron when they bear the name Aquilina at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on October 10. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
