Why they are a saint
Born on the island of Aegina of rich and eminent parents, she gave her goods to the poor and went off to a monastery, where she heaped greater and greater asceticism on herself. The Orthodox Church commemorates Athanasia on April 12.
Patronage / why chosen as patron
Orthodox Christians usually take Athanasia as a patron when they bear the name Athanasia at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on April 12. As a monastic, she is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
