Baradates

Venerable Baradates, Hermit of Syria

New Calendar February 22 Old Calendar March 6

Why they are a saint

Saint Baradates the Syrian began to live as a desert-dweller in a hut near Antioch. He then built a stone cell upon a hill, so cramped and low that the ascetic could stand in it only in a stooped position. Venerated as a monastic saint, honored for a life of prayer and asceticism.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Baradates as a patron when they bear the name Baradates at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on February 22. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.

Prayer

O holy Baradates, pray to God for us.

A short general prayer to a saint, not a liturgical text. No public-domain troparion for this saint is included.
