Why they are a saint

Saint Barlaam of Khutyn lived in the XII century, and was the son of a noble Novgorodian and spent his childhood in Novgorod. The Orthodox Church commemorates Barlaam on November 6.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Barlaam as a patron when they bear the name Barlaam at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on November 6. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
