Why they are a saint

Baruch is kept on the calendar as an Old Testament prophet. Baruch ben Neriah was the scribe, disciple, secretary, and devoted friend of the Biblical prophet Jeremiah. Baruch is remembered as the scribe and companion of Jeremiah; a book under his name is read in the Orthodox Old Testament. Orthodox Christians honor the prophets as those who spoke the word of God and pointed toward Christ.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Baruch as a patron when they bear the name Baruch at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on September 28. As a prophet, he is also honored by those who seek to hear and keep God's word.
