Why they are a saint

The Holy Martyrs Bassos, Eusebios, Eutykhios and Basilides were courtiers of the emperor Diocletian. He sent them as witnesses of the suffering of the Nicomedia bishop Theopemptos (Comm. 5 January) for his faith in Christ. They themselves came to believe and accepted holy Baptism. Venerated as a martyr who died for the faith in Christ.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Bassus as a patron when they bear the name Bassus at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on January 20. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
