Why they are a saint

The Monk Bessarion, Wonderworker of Egypt, by descent an Egyptian, was baptised while still in his youth and he led a strict life, striving to preserve the grace given him during Baptism. The Orthodox Church commemorates Bessarion on June 6.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Bessarion as a patron when they bear the name Bessarion at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on June 6. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
