Why they are a saint

The Holy Martyr Caluf the Egyptian lived during the third century, and was from the city of Thebes. For his confession of faith in Christ he was arrested and taken before the prefect of the city. He was suspended head downward, and received a cruel beating. Venerated as a martyr who died for the faith in Christ.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Caluf of Egypt as a patron when they bear the name Caluf at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on May 19. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
