Why they are a saint

Saint Christopher was born in Gazara, near Trebizond. He was the head of a monastery on Mount Mela in the second half of the seventh century (641-668). Venerated as a monastic saint, honored for a life of prayer and asceticism.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Christopher of Gazara as a patron when they bear the name Christopher at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on August 18. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
