Constantine

St Constantine, Metropolitan of Kiev and All Russia († 1159)

New Calendar June 5 Old Calendar June 18

Why they are a saint

In his day there was great disorder among the princes of Russia and in the Russian Church. One of the rival princes appointed a monk named Kim as Metropolitan of Kiev without seeking the blessing of the Patriarch of Constantinople, as was still done at that time. The Patriarch sent Metropolitan Constantine to investigate, and he deposed Kim and banished the priests whom Kim had ordained.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Constantine as a patron when they bear the name Constantine at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on June 5. As a bishop, he is also remembered by clergy and those who serve the Church.
