Why they are a saint

Saint Cornelius of Paleostrov and Olonets, born at Pskov, was the founder of monastic life on Pali island in Lake Onega at the end of the fourteenth century. The Orthodox Church commemorates Cornelius on May 19.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Cornelius as a patron when they bear the name Cornelius at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on May 19. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
