Why they are a saint

Saint Cornelius, the Igoumen of Paleostrov, Olonets was born in Pskov. He entered a monastery and was tonsured as an adult, and at first he began his monastic struggles at Valaam Monastery. Venerated as a monastic saint, honored for a life of prayer and asceticism.

Orthodox Christians usually take Cornelius of Paleostrov as a patron when they bear the name Cornelius at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on August 21. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
