Why they are a saint

St Cyril was… from Alexandria, born about the year 376, the nephew of Theophilus, Patriarch of Alexandria, who also instructed the Saint in his youth. The Orthodox Church commemorates Cyril on June 9.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Cyril as a patron when they bear the name Cyril at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on June 9. As a bishop, he is also remembered by clergy and those who serve the Church.
