Why they are a saint

Saint Damiane (in the world King Demetre I) was the son of Holy King Davit the Restorer. King Davit proclaimed his son co-ruler of Georgia and crowned him with his own hands. Venerated as a right-believing ruler, honored for a holy life lived in a position of power.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Damiane as a patron when they bear the name Damiane at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on May 23. As a ruler, he is also remembered by those who bear responsibility for others.
