Why they are a saint

The Holy New Martyr Demetrius was born on October 9, 1818 in Sliven, Bulgaria. His parents had no children for the first eight years of their marriage. Their prayers to God were answered, and their sons Stephen and Demetrius were born. Venerated as a martyr who died for the faith in Christ.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Demetrius as a patron when they bear the name Demetrius at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on January 30. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
