Why they are a saint

He was murdered at the age of eight by the evil designs of Boris Godunov, in the town of Uglich. After his death he appeared to a monk and accurately foretold Boris Godunov’s death. Countless miracles were worked at the grave of the Tsarevich. Venerated as a martyr who died for the faith in Christ.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Dimitri as a patron when they bear the name Dimitri at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on June 16. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
