Why they are a saint

Our holy Father Dionysius, a native of Vologda, was one of the greatest ascetics of Russia’s Northern Thebaid (See A. The Orthodox Church commemorates Dionysius on June 1.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Dionysius as a patron when they bear the name Dionysius at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on June 1. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
