Why they are a saint

The Monk Dometios lived during the IV Century, and he was by birth a Persian. In his youthful years he was converted to the faith by a Christian named Uaros. Forsaking Persia, he withdrew to the frontier-city of Niziba (in Mesopotamia), where he accepted Baptism in one of the monasteries and was tonsured into monasticism.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Dometios as a patron when they bear the name Dometios at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on August 7. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
