Why they are a saint
Saint Edwin (Eadwine) was the son of Alla, King of Deira, and was born around 584. When his father died, Edwin was cheated out of his kingdom by King Ethelred of Bernicia, who united Bernicia and Deira into a single kingdom of Northumbria. Venerated as a martyr who died for the faith in Christ.
Patronage / why chosen as patron
Orthodox Christians usually take Edwin as a patron when they bear the name Edwin at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on October 12. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
