Why they are a saint
Saint Elias the Egyptian became a monk and pursued asceticism for seventy-five years on a desolate mountain in a cave. The Orthodox Church commemorates Elias the Hermit on January 8.
Patronage / why chosen as patron
Orthodox Christians usually take Elias the Hermit as a patron when they bear the name Elias at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on January 8. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
