Why they are a saint

The Holy Martyrs Elpidephorus, Dius, Bithonius, and Galycus suffered for their faith in Jesus Christ. They cut off the head of Saint Elpidephorus with a sword, Saint Dius was executed by stoning, Saint Bithonius was drowned in the sea, and Saint Galycus was condemned to be eaten by wild beasts. Venerated as a martyr who died for the faith in Christ.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Elpidephorus as a patron when they bear the name Elpidephorus at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on April 3. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
