Why they are a saint
Saint Markianḗ was the wife of Emperor Justin I the Elder (reigned 518 - 527). She was distinguished for her piety, her ascetical life, and her philanthropy. Her righteous death was peaceful, and she was buried in the church of the Holy Apostles at Constantinople.
Patronage / why chosen as patron
Orthodox Christians usually take Empress Markianḗ as a patron when they bear the name Empress at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on January 27. As a ruler, she is also remembered by those who bear responsibility for others.
