Why they are a saint

Eustathios Placidas was Roman general converted by a vision of the Cross between a stag's antlers; martyred with his family. The years given for this life are 2nd century. His feast is kept with the other great martyrs of the calendar. This memory is kept in the whole Orthodox Church.

Orthodox Christians usually take Eustathios Placidas as a patron when they bear the name Eustathios; Eustace at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on September 20. Those who share his calling as a soldier also ask his prayers.
