Eustratius the Wonderworker
Venerable Eustratius the Wonderworker († 9th C)
New Calendar January 9 Old Calendar January 22
Why they are a saint
He was born to pious parents in Tarsia in Bithynia. At the age of twenty he entered monastic life at the Monastery of Agaures near his home. There he became a model of prayer, ascesis and zeal for holiness — he possessed nothing but the cloak he wore, and did not even have his own cell, choosing instead to sleep on the bare ground.
Patronage / why chosen as patron
Orthodox Christians usually take Eustratius the Wonderworker as a patron when they bear the name Eustratius at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on January 9. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
