Gabriel

The Holy Archangel Gabriel

New Calendar March 26 Old Calendar April 8

Why they are a saint

Gabriel is the archangel of the Annunciation, who brought the news of Christ’s birth to Mary and of John’s birth to Zachariah. The Church does not commemorate a human life here, but a bodiless messenger of God. Orthodox Christians remember that Gospel greeting, “Rejoice, full of grace,” as Gabriel’s ministry. His name in the calendar is the archangel’s, not a stand-in for an earthly saint.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Traditionally asked to pray for messengers, diplomats, aviators (with Michael). The reason for this custom is not recorded here.

Prayer

O holy Gabriel, pray to God for us.

A short general prayer to a saint, not a liturgical text. No public-domain troparion for this saint is included.
