Why they are a saint

Saint Gelasius, the holy martyr of Christ, lived during a time of fierce persecution. He gave away all his property and possessions to the poor, put on a long white garment, and went to visit those who were facing martyrdom. Venerated as a martyr who died for the faith in Christ.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Gelasius as a patron when they bear the name Gelasius at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on June 6. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
