Why they are a saint
The Holy Martyr George the New was born into an illustrious Bulgarian family, living in the capital city of Bulgaria, Sredets (now the city of Sofia). The Orthodox Church commemorates George on February 11.
Patronage / why chosen as patron
Orthodox Christians usually take George as a patron when they bear the name George at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on February 11. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
