Why they are a saint

Saint George (Greek: Γεώργιος, romanized: Geṓrgios; died 23 April 303), also George of Lydda, was an early Christian martyr who is venerated as a saint in Christianity. According to holy tradition, he was a soldier in the Roman army. Of Cappadocian Greek origin, he became a member of the Praetorian Guard for Roman emperor Diocletian.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take George as a patron when they bear the name George at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on February 14. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
