Why they are a saint

Saint George (Greek: Γεώργιος, romanized: Geṓrgios; died 23 April 303), also George of Lydda, was an early Christian martyr who is venerated as a saint in Christianity. According to holy tradition, he was a soldier in the Roman army. Of Cappadocian Greek origin, he became a member of the Praetorian Guard for Roman emperor Diocletian.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take George as a patron when they bear the name George at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on September 21. Georgian Orthodox faithful also honor his as one of their own.
