Why they are a saint

Saint George came from Sofia, Bulgaria, and was a soldier who served in the Ottoman army along with some other Christians. The Orthodox Church commemorates George of Sofia on March 26.

Orthodox Christians usually take George of Sofia as a patron when they bear the name George at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on March 26. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
