Geróntios

Venerable Geróntios, the Founder of the Skḗtē of Saint Anna on Mount Athos

New Calendar July 26 Old Calendar August 8

Why they are a saint

Saint Geróntios was the Igoumen of the old Bouleuterίon Monastery on Mount Athos. But since this Monastery was near the seashore and was subject to many barbarian raids, it was abandoned by the monks, who moved to other inaccessible places on Mount Athos. Venerated as a monastic saint, honored for a life of prayer and asceticism.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Geróntios as a patron when they bear the name Geróntios at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on July 26. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
