Why they are a saint

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries the Dagestanis were continually raiding and pillaging the Davit-Gareji Wilderness. The Orthodox Church commemorates Gerontius on August 12.

Orthodox Christians usually take Gerontius as a patron when they bear the name Gerontius at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on August 12. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
