Why they are a saint

The Holy Great Martyr George the Victory-Bearer, was a native of Cappadocia (a district in Asia Minor), and he grew up in a deeply believing Christian family. The Orthodox Church commemorates Greatmartyr on April 23.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Greatmartyr as a patron when they bear the name Greatmartyr at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on April 23. As a martyr, he is also asked for courage and faithfulness under trial.
