Why they are a saint

Saint Gregory of Mount Athos was born in Serbia, and pursued asceticism on Mt Athos. He built and dedicated the monastery of Saint Nicholas, which was later renamed Grigoriou in his honor. In the records of Mt Athos the saint’s signature dating from 1405 was discovered. Venerated as a monastic saint, honored for a life of prayer and asceticism.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Gregory as a patron when they bear the name Gregory at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on December 7. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
