Why they are a saint

Saint Gregory was tonsured at the Kiev Caves monastery in the time of Saint Theodosius (May 3). The saint devoted much time to reading books, which were his sole possession. He had the ability to bring thieves to their senses. Venerated as a monastic saint, honored for a life of prayer and asceticism.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Gregory as a patron when they bear the name Gregory at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on January 8. As a monastic, he is also asked for help in prayer, fasting, and repentance.
