Why they are a saint

Haggai is kept on the calendar as an Old Testament prophet. Haggai or Aggeus was a Hebrew prophet active during the building of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, one of the twelve minor prophets in the Hebrew Bible, and the author or subject of the Book of Haggai. The Book of Haggai is kept among the twelve minor prophets, urging the rebuilding of the Temple. Orthodox Christians honor the prophets as those who spoke the word of God and pointed toward Christ.

Patronage / why chosen as patron

Orthodox Christians usually take Haggai as a patron when they bear the name Haggai at baptism, or were born or baptized near the feast on December 16. As a prophet, he is also honored by those who seek to hear and keep God's word.
